It's always interesting when a piece comes with historical documentation. This exceptional tray and stand came with the 1968 bill of sale from James Robinson Antiques in New York. James Robinson was founded in 1912 and they remain one of the finest antique stores in the city today. In 1968, the tray and stand sold for $750.00. Calculating for inflation, that would work out to just over $5,000.00 today. The papier mache tray is beautifully decorated with pagodas, birds and a bridge against a backdrop of flowers and trees. It has a custom-cut piece of glass which may be inset on the base of the tray to protect it. The carved wood stand is ebonized with gilt decoration. This is a striking piece that would make a casually elegant addition to a living room, den or library- as a coffee or side table. 32" l., 24" 1/2" w., 17" h. English, c. Early 19th c.
