John Mascheroni for Swaim; Upholstered Bench

John Mascheroni is a Pratt Institute educated, American designer whose father was an Italian craftsman.  Mascheroni is a descendent of generations of Italian artisans and learned woodworking by making European reproductions at his father's studio in Brooklyn.  In the 1960's he developed an interest in contemporary furniture influenced mainly by the work of George Nelson and Charles Eames.  He believed both men were "true designers" who understood the manufacturing process.  In 1973, he partnered with Swaim Inc. to create their first contemporary collection.  It was very well received, and so successful that Bloomingdale's gave it exclusive space in its 59th and Lex., Manhattan store.  We're not sure if this piece was part of that collection, but it dates to about the same time, mid-seventies.  The style is modern yet timeless.  The original velvet upholstery feels modern as well, in rich tones of blues and browns.  It is very comfortable, with or without the removable bolster cushion.  48" w., 22" d., 33" h.  American, c. 1970's SOLD

Kroehler Furniture MCM Wardrobe

It's all in the details....  While Kroehler produced some great looking case goods pieces, including several lines designed by Gilbert Rohde, we don't come across them very often.  This wardrobe is the third piece we have featured from what seems to be a fairly rare series.  We couldn't find any other examples.  The series is sharply designed and each piece has interesting design details.  This wardrobe has two doors which open to a compartment with six pull out drawers, four shelves and a pull out, flip mirror.  There is an electrical outlet as well.  Below are two full size drawers.  The drawer pulls and knobs are patinated brass with turquoise enamelled inset centers.  The legs have ebonized decoration with circular brass discs.  63" h., 38" w., 19" d.  American, c. 1960's  SOLD

Italian Mirror

Tall, gold and handsome, Italian gilt wood mirror with paint decorated frieze and fluted columns.  It has a shelf and a secret(ish) compartment with painted seagulls on the flip-down door.  It would make a great hall mirror.  57" l., 22" w., 6" d.  Italian, c. 1940's  SOLD

Empire Console

As a kid, growing up in Pennsylvania, my best friend's grandmother was an antique dealer.  From about the age of six or seven, we were on her coattails most weekends checking out tag sales, antique markets, auctions, etc.  When a piece was very special, she used to say it "has the magic."  This piece is the whole magic show.  This early 19th century Empire console features a large handcarved giltwood eagle with outstretched wings atop a giltwood ball.  The carved and gilded top has a thick inset piece of marble with beautiful coloring and pattern.  The carved and gilded base has faux finished decoration.  The piece is in very good vintage condition and has been professionally restored with some moulding expertly recreated and replaced.  Most likely American (but possibly English) Early 19th c.  32.5" h., 32.5" w., 17.5" d.  SOLD

Louis XVI Style Bouillotte Table

Elegant Louis XVI style mahogany double drawer table with gold embossed leather-top slides.  The Carrara marble top is trimmed with a mounted brass gallery and the tapered, fluted legs have brass capped feet.  24.5" diam.  29.5" h.  American, mid-20th c. SOLD

Baker Furniture Table

This is the second of two classic Baker tables, new to the shop today, that work nicely together but are not a matched pair.  This one is also two tiered and also has a bookmatched, burl walnut, inlay top with a patinated brass gallery.  Instead of a drawer, this table has a slide with ring pulls.  The tapered legs are fluted with brass capped feet.  The sizes are identical, 28" square, 22" h.  American, c. 1960's  SOLD
Condition:  Good vintage condition with some wear and marking on the table top.

Barnard and Simonds Table and Chairs

The Barnard and Simonds Furniture Company was founded in New York in 1898, moved to Michigan in 1959, and was purchased by Baker Furniture in 1967.  They specialized in very fine quality American and English Country reproductions and adaptations.  We love this classic leather games/ library/ breakfast table and chairs with brass tacks and mahogany faux bamboo legs.  The table has gold embossing and a slightly scalloped skirt.  A set of four chairs without the table in similar condition recently sold on Chairish and was listed at $3,800.00 U.S.  https://www.chairish.com/product/611163/barnard-simonds-leather-library-chairs-set-of-4

Two of the chairs we are featuring are in good vintage condition with some cracking but no tears and the leather is still very soft.  Two of the chairs are in very good vintage condition with a very small amount of cracking, no tears, and very soft leather.  The table is in excellent vintage condition.  We have only ever come across one other piece by Barnard and Simonds which we sold a few years ago.  It was a screen (pictured) and it was also very handsome and beautifully crafted.

Chinoiserie Credenza

No name dropping here.  There is no maker's mark or label on this piece.  And while we love a good research project, we couldn't find any pieces similar let alone identical to this credenza.  That being said, the quality is great and the design is beautiful and very unique.  The ten drawer bleached walnut credenza has bleached, burled pulls framed in faux bamboo.  The legs are also faux bamboo.  The piece is in good original vintage condition with some wear to the finish and some marking.  60" l., 20" d., 35" h.  American, c. 1950's  SOLD

Chinoiserie Tall Chest

This is the companion piece to the credenza posted yesterday.  It is also bleached walnut with bleached, burled drawer pulls and door handles framed in faux bamboo.  The legs are also faux bamboo.  The top has two doors which open to ten shallow drawers.  Below are four deeper drawers.  The piece is in good vintage condition with minor wear to the finish and some marking.  40" w., 20" d., 50" h.  American, c. 1950's  SOLD
