Lee Reynolds; Sailboats

Reynolds was born Lee Reynolds Burr in Los Angeles in 1936.  He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts and by 1965 had started his Vanguard Studios in Beverly Hills.  The studio's mission was to produce decorative works of art in the form of avant-garde sculptures and paintings.  Vanguard employed a variety of artists to meet this goal, and all pieces are signed with the 'Lee Reynolds' signature.  Works from the prolific studio have become quite collectible in the last few years.  This large and very decorative signed abstract piece in a pointillist/ cubist manner depicts sailboats on the water.  The work is done in soft muted colors and the mood is calm and relaxing.  40.5" h., 50" l.  American, c. 1970's  SOLD

Kroehler Furniture MCM Chest

It's all in the details....  While Kroehler produced some great looking case goods pieces, including several lines designed by Gilbert Rohde, we don't come across them very often.  This tall chest is one of three pieces we've just brought in from what seems to be a fairly rare series.  We couldn't find any other examples.  The series is sharply designed and each piece has interesting design details.  This five drawer dresser has a slim top drawer and four full depth drawers below, two of which are divided.  The drawer pulls and knobs are patinated brass with turquoise enamelled inset centers.  The legs have ebonized decoration with circular brass discs.  36" w., 18" d., 47" h.  American, c. 1960's  SOLD

Raymond Loewy for Mengel Furniture, Pair of Chests

Raymond Loewy was one of the most important industrial designers of the twentieth century and we have been fortunate to have had a number of his pieces pass through the shop.  Below is a grouping of a few of our favorites.  Please check out his official website for more information on his very interesting life and career.  http://www.raymondloewy.com/
This pair of bachelor chests was designed by Raymond Loewy for Mengel furniture in the 1950's.  It's pretty rare to find cerused oak pieces from this period in their original condition.  Due to wear, they usually get refinished.  The link below features a pair that have been lacquered in black.  https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/storage-case-pieces/commodes-chests-of-drawers/pair-of-oak-chests-raymond-loewy-mengel/id-f_5135473/
The pair we are offering are in excellent vintage condition and are in our top tier of favorite pieces.  The chests have an elegant simplicity that could work in a more sophisticated urban setting as well as a cool cottage or beach house.  The four drawer chests have their original brushed aluminum bar pulls.  34" l., 19" d., 32" h.  American, c. 1950's  SOLD
