Michael Taylor for Baker; Dining Table and 8 Chairs

"A room should not be 'too perfect'.  Perfection in every detail usually makes a room look studied, formal, rather dull, and even forbidding."  Words of wisdom from one of AD's "20 Greatest Designers of All Time" and "Interior Design Legends".  Michael Taylor (1927-1986), in addition to being one of America's top designers of all time and creating the cool and casual, yet sophisticated "California Design Style" that became his trademark, was also an accomplished furniture designer.  This casually sophisticated set was designed by Taylor for Baker Furniture.  The two-toned table has his signature interlocking brass rings on the nicely detailed, beveled, open apron.  The table legs have concealed casters trimmed in brass.  There are two additional leaves.  There are 8 Asian Modern style chairs (2 arm and 6 side), also designed by Taylor for Baker.  The seat cushions have newer upholstery.  This is one of the nicest sets we have featured in the shop.  The timeless design has stood the test of time very well for the last 60+ years and will likely stand up just as well in 2078 as today.  You never go wrong with a modern classic.  Table,  66" l., 42" w., 29" h.  Leaves, 18" each.  Fully extended table is 102" long.  Arm chairs, 22" w., 18" d., 36" h.  Side chairs, 20" w., 17" d., 35" h.  American, c. 1950's  SOLD

Bernice Fenwick Martin; Waterfall Near Morrison Lake (Muskoka)

I didn't know too much about Canadian Art when I moved here 25 years ago.  Even though my degree was in Art History, never once was a Canadian artist mentioned in school.  No discussion of Group of 7, Painters 11, etc.  One of my favourite parts of MTA has been the discovery of the abundance of exceptional art here in Canada, both historical and contemporary.  In particular, I have loved finding and researching paintings by women artists who were contemporaries of and painted with the Group of 7.  They were under appreciated at the time and for many years after, but are finally beginning to receive proper recognition.  One such artist was Bernice Fenwick Martin.

Maurizio Tempestini for Salterini; Patio Set

Even if you're pretty green when it comes to design, and you don't know Jack Nicklaus about MCM, you'll have to agree this threesome is a hole in one.  This patio set was designed by Florentine designer Maurizio Tempestini (1908-1960) and produced by the John B. Salterini Company.  John B. Salterini emigrated from Italy to New York in the 1920's and began producing the finest and highest quality iron furniture from his Brooklyn studio in the 1930's.  Initially he was producing pieces mainly for the New York "establishment".  Eventually the company expanded production to meet the growing demand for their furniture, but still maintained the highest standards of quality and design.  The pair of chairs are from the "ribbon" series.  The rare two-tier table has a white glass inset on the lower tier and a clear piece on top.  Chairs, 32" h., 20" w., 22" d.  Table, 27" h., 35" w., 26" d.  American, c. 1950's SOLD
