William Edwin Atkinson; "Humber Bay"

W. E. Atkinson (1862-1926) was a Canadian painter who was born in Toronto and studied at the Ontario School of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in Paris.  In 1904 he won the highest award for landscape painting given by the Ontario Society of Artists.  His landscapes tended to be of a quiet and contemplative nature.  This loosely painted, impressionistic oil on panel entitled "Humber Bay" has a soft, monochromatic palette and a very peaceful feel.  It is signed by the artist and has a typed obituary from "The Toronto Star" dated August 3, 1926 on the reverse.  The obituary notes that "The Willows" a famous painting hangs in the National Gallery and that the Ontario Government has acquired some of his pictures for their museum".  Framed, 15" l., 11 1/2" h.  Canadian, c. late 19th c. "Thonet, No. 16" Style Settee

This classic Thonet style bentwood settee has stood the design test of time.  It would be at home in a traditional setting as well as a very modern interior where it's graceful curves and natural materials would provide a nice contrast in a contemporary space.  While this piece has no Thonet signature, it retains portions of undecipherable original paper labels and has the impressed stamp "Made in Poland".  Thonet pieces were and continue to be made in Polish factories and the quality of this piece, even if not one hundred percent attributable to Thonet, is of the same standard.  46" l., 18" w., 34" h.  Polish, first half 20th c. SOLD
