Elegant, lacquered, Chippendale style Chinoiserie secretary with highly decorative inlay.  This piece really needs to be seen in person to be appreciated.  It is beautifully laquered, inlaid and hand painted with figural, architectural and natural motifs.  The piece features a drop front desk which opens to slots for letters, stationery, etc.  The top has two doors which open to shelves for display.  36" l., 17" w., 90" h.  first half 20th c. A Little Bit Country...A Little Bit Rock and Roll

We have returned from an amazing vacation out west.  

It was a little bit country.  We stayed in a yurt at an inn on a vineyard in Washington State.  It was like being on safari in a vineyard; great food, great wines and fantastic views.  It gets quite arid and desert like two hours inland from the coast.  We met a rattlesnake on our hike one morning and fell asleep to a chorus of coyotes outside our yurt one night.  

It was a little bit rock and roll.  In Seattle, we happened upon a Jeff Buckley tribute concert at the Crocodile.    It was one of the best concerts I have seen in a long time and one of those serendipitous happenings that make a vacation.  Jeff Buckley was my favorite singer/songwriter.  More bands the next night and then a great birthday celebration in Vancouver for my brother to end the vacation.

Found lots of inspiration for the shop and also found a great young artist who will hopefully be joining the group at Michael Thomas.

Westward Bound

We will be heading west for the next week and a bit.  This view of the Columbia River is one we are looking forward to seeing in person as well as many others on the west coast of both the U.S. and Canada.  Michael Thomas will be open for business as usual while we are away.  However, we will not be updating the blog regularly.  Instead we will offer two very special casual Friday feature pieces this week.  Once we return,  we will be posting some fantastic pieces including a beautiful inlaid and lacquered Chinoiserie secretary, a very impressive Tomlinson cabinet as well as new work by Britt Randle and lots of other great stuff.

"Dorothy Draper" Stool or Side Table

Dorothy Draper (1889-1969) was an American interior decorator and furniture designer.  She was born in Tuxedo Park, into a prominent N.Y. family. Early on she was recognized for her innate sense of style. In her work she was known for a bold use of color and pattern.  Her style was coined "Modern Baroque".  Amongst her more significant projects were designs for the Carlyle Hotel and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in N.Y.C., and Chicago's Drake Hotel.  This table or stool was designed for her "Espana" Collection for Henredon.  It has an inlaid top and "X' base with brass feet and decorative medallions.  It also has a custom  bevelled glass top (not shown).  24" l., 19" w., 19" h.  American, c. 1950's SOLD

"Bert England for Johnson Furniture Co." Cabinets

Exceptional quality and design on this pair of cabinets designed by Bert England for the "Forward Trend" Collection by Johnson Furniture Company.  I have never seen anything quite like this pair of cabinets....and exactly right for today.  One opens to reveal a pull out writing desk with light, a smaller pull out writing surface, a divided file section, drawers, and a filing cabinet.  The other opens to reveal 6 drawers and an open section on the bottom.  When open, doors sit flush against cabinet sides.  In one of the original ads from 1959 for the Bert England "Forward Trend" Collection, the collection is described as "original designs of unusual distinction to please more perceptive clients".  Each cabinet is 40" l., 19" w., 49 1/2"h.  American, c.1961 SOLD
