Halfred Tygesen; "Danish Trawler"
Halfred Tygesen (1890-1951) was born in Copenhagen, Denmark and came to Canada in 1926. He had attended art school in Denmark and became a member of the Danish Royal Academy. In Canada, Tygesen introduced a technique for pastel "painting". He travelled across the country painting scenes from Stanley Park in Vancouver to the Ontario countryside. He also painted Danish landscapes and seascapes based on drawings he had done before he moved to Canada. While he was quite prolific and sold through a wide variety of channels, including the Eaton College store, his paintings are becoming increasingly harder to come by. This oil pastel painting depicts a "typical Danish trawler in the Danish Harbour of Skagen". It has its original frame and backing which has Tygesen's signature and description of the piece. 24" l., 20" h. Canadian, c. 1946 SOLD

Harold Town; Pair of Drawings
Sometimes things are not quite what they appear. Sometimes they are more. This is one such case. This early Harold Town drawing was framed with the same style frame as the drawing posted last week. We thought it was a single drawing of a young male nude. When we took the drawing out of the frame looking for information, we discovered on the reverse, another wonderful sketch of a young woman on a sofa. The male nude is relatively monochromatic while the very energetic drawing of the woman has a lively mix of colors similar to the female nude posted last week. Framed 31" l., 24 1/2" w. SOLD

Harold Town; Female Nude
Harold Town (1924-1990) was a Canadian artist who was a founding member of the "Painters Eleven", a group of Toronto abstract expressionist painters which included Jack Bush, William Ronald, Jock Macdonald and Oscar Cahen. The Painters Eleven were heavily influenced by contemporary post-war American artists such as Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollack.
Harold Town graduated from Ontario College of Art in 1945. After graduation, Town became an illustrator for ad agencies and magazines such as Maclean's and Mayfair. This very early drawing was done around the time he graduated from O.C.A. The back reads "Harold Town, sketch of girlfriend Valentine, about '47-'49". It is a nicely rendered drawing of a female nude done mainly in black and white with highlights of pink, blue and yellow. Framed, 31" l., 24 1/2" w. SOLD
