Robert Sonneman Mirror

This handsome, tailored mirror was designed by Robert Sonneman as part of his 'Modern Classics' collection.  The maple frame has a recessed 'mat' of black grass cloth and the mirror is beveled.  39.5" h., 29.25" w.  American, c. 20th c.  SOLD

T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb; Biomorphic Cocktail Table

Furniture collecting.  In the early 1950's, if you had exceptional style, ample space and a plentiful decorating allowance, you might have chosen (or at least coveted) the 'Mesa' table designed by T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb.  Today, the same holds true.  But your plentiful allowance would have to be exuberant.  Last year a 'Mesa' table sold at auction for $143,000.00 U.S.

In the early 1950's, if you had exceptional style, and fell in love with the 'Mesa' table, but your space didn't allow for its monumental 72" x 50" size, you might have opted for a smaller and sleeker of Gibbings' biomorphic designs for Widdicomb.  Today, the same holds true.  In store now is a fully restored Model 1759 biomorphic cocktail table designed by Gibbings for Widdicomb.  It's one of his most desirable tables and an elegant beauty from every angle.  It's signed and dated.  54" l., 28" w., 16" h.  American, c. 1952  SOLD

Le Bertetti; Penida and Bantang

Italian Art.  Clelia Bertetti (1904-1995) was an Italian ceramic artist and art director who was most active during the 1930's.  She received her training at l'accademia di Belle Arti in Torino, and in Florence at the studio of sculptor Guido Cadori.  She was the most famous of the art directors at Lenci Pottery where she worked from 1927 to 1930.  In 1929, her work was shown at Gallery Pesaro in Milan.  In 1932 she left Lenci and partnered with Piero Ducato to open Le Bertetti studio in Torino.  Her work was featured in many prominent exhibitions in Italy during the 1930's including Mostra degli Amici dell'Arte (Exhibition of Friends of the Arts) in Torino in 1933, Mostra dell'Artigianato (Exhibition of Crafts) in Florence in 1935 and Mostra d'Arte Sacra (Exhibition of Sacred Art) at the Vatican.  The studio closed in 1942 but Bertetti continued with her career in the arts focusing primarily on sculpture.  She died in Torino in 1995.
This large and rare pair of Le Bertetti figures are exquisitely executed.  The Indonesian girl, Penida, is playing a tambourine and dressed in a skirt with handpainted animals, fish and human figures.  She wears a colorful necklace and flowers in her hair.  Her skin is done in a matte glaze while her hair and dress are gloss.  The Indonesian boy, Bantang, plays a sitar and is dressed in white pants with a printed belt.  He is wearing a patterned kerchief.  He also has contrasting matte and gloss glazes.  Penida, 17" h., 14" w., 9" d.  Bantang, 15" h., 20" w., 10" d.  Italian, c. 1930's  SOLD
Condition:  Excellent-very good vintage condition with age appropriate wear.  Penida has two tiny glaze flakes, one to the tambourine and one to a flower.  Bantang has a repair to the tie on the kerchief and a small glaze flake on his shoulder.

Paul McCobb Wing Chair

If you would like to invest in the best, this is the real (and rare) McCobb.  Paul McCobb (1917-1969) was an American furniture designer and interior decorator.  He studied fine art in Boston and later moved to N.Y.C., where by 1945 he had established his own design company, Paul McCobb Design Associates.  By 1950 he had become a household name and earned himself the nickname of "America's Decorator".  His work has been exhibited at museums including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  He was a five time recipient of the MoMA's Good Design Award between 1950 and 1955.  Today his designs can be found in the collections of the Cooper Hewitt, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum, amongst others.

I've never really taken to describing architecture or furniture as 'sexy'.  That being said, when it comes to this rare wing chair designed by McCobb, it seems to fit perfectly.  Those curves.  That back and body.  Those arms and legs.  It's a bit of a super model (model 3015).  It's newly outfitted in a Knoll-like (Rivington), nicely textured, neutral upholstery.  If you decide to take it home, don't feel shallow if initially you just want to show it off to your friends.  Soon enough you will realize it isn't just about its looks.  Sitting in it is pure pleasure.  This is your forever chair.  39" h., 32" w., 29" d.  American, c. 1957  SOLD

John Widdicomb; Pair of Etageres

Gilbert Rohde for Herman Miller; Two-Tier Table

Gilbert Rohde is one of my all time favourite designers. In the past 10 years we have only featured a few of his designs.  Amongst many accolades, he is credited with turning Herman Miller into a modern furniture company. A bedroom group we featured a few years ago was designed by Rohde for Herman Miller.   This two-tiered glass table is another of his designs for Herman Miller.  It still looks as fresh and modern today as it did in 1939.  The two thick glass circles are graduated and held in place by the two-piece wood legs and rounded wood caps.  24.5" h., 22" diam.  American, c. 1939  $595.00  SOLD

Merton Gershun for American of Martinsville; Tall Chest

Handsome chest of drawers designed by Merton Gershun for the Dania line by American of Martinsville.  The chest has three smaller square front drawers with brass hardware over three long, louvered front drawers.  A long shallow top drawer has six divided compartments.  The legs are tapered with brass accents.  38" l., 19" w., 44" h.  American, c. 1960's  SOLD

Overman Pod Chair

Giandomenico Belotti for Fly Line; Set of 4 'Spaghetti' Stools

Strung out over Spaghetti.  Our February windows feature four stools from Giandomenico Belotti's 'Spaghetti' series.  (Pieces from this series can also be found in the permanent collection of  MOMA.)  The frames of the stools are enamelled steel.  The back rests and seats are made of thick PVC strings, making them very comfortable.  The string theme was carried through to the window design.  A single piece of yarn strung around a bunch of nails formed each of the four backdrops.

Arthur Court Lily Table

The lilies are in bloom again.  This very decorative lily table was designed by Arthur Court and has a gilt metal base and glass top.  The base is composed of a large lily in full bloom which holds the glass, two buds, stems and leaves.  32" diam., 16.5" h.  American, c. 1970's  SOLD
