Oscar Picks

As the 85th annual Oscars quickly approach, here are a couple of our best picture picks by Olexander Wlasenko.......

Olexander Wlasenko; "Arcade"

Eye candy.  This new work by Olexander was inspired by the film "Lola" which was the directorial debut for Jacques Demy.  Anouk Aimee starred in the title role of Lola.  The film is set in a coastal city in France.  A young man, Roland Cassard, played by Marc Michel, is at a crossroads in his life and floundering when he falls for the lovely Lola, who is still consumed with her former lover.  In this scene, the very handsome Roland is walking through an arcade to rendezvous with his lover Lola. Charcoal on paper.  Framed, 42" l., 24" h. SOLD

Olexander Wlasenko; "Anna"

Strikingly beautiful new work by Olexander entitled "Anna".  The image is of  Marie-France Pisier in the role of Anna from the 1965 thriller Le Vampire de Dusseldorf.  Marie-France Pisier was a French actress, screenwriter and director who appeared in many films of the French New Wave, and such noted later films as Cousin Cousine, which won her a Best Supporting Actress award.  This work is truly dazzling.  Framed, 42" l., 24" h.  SOLD

Pinnochio d'Italia

I won't lie, this is one particularly cute Pinnochio.  He is a very large version of the main character from Carlo Collodi's 1883 children's novel, The Adventures of Pinnochio.  He is hand painted and has a wooden body with a movable head, arms and legs.  He stands 30" high and would make an original and very special decorative accessory for a kid's (young or old) room.  Italian, c. 1950's  SOLD

"Marks Chair Co." Campaign Chaise

A former boss and great mentor once told me "....there are no bad colors, only bad applications".  I think the same holds true for design styles. Victorian is definitely not one of the more popular periods for interior design right now.  However, there are some amazing Victorian pieces out there that, when peppered into a room, can make a great impact and add some real visual interest.  This is one of those pieces. It was made by the Markga Chair Co. of N.Y.C. in 1878 and is a unique and beautiful object.  The frame is made of painted and decorated iron and stained oak, and the body is caned.  It is on casters and folds down to a very compact, transportable size.  It's simplicity and style would allow it to tie in with many styles seamlessly.   78" l., 26" w.  American, c. 1878 SOLD

Pair of Mid-Century Colonial Lamps

There's something about mid-century colonial pieces that just feels warm and comfortable.  This pair of brushed brass lamps are of very high quality and have thick, amber glass shades and frosted inner shades with clear tops.  I think Samantha Stevens had the same lamps in her Connecticut home.  21" h., 10" w.  American, c. 1960's  SOLD

Empire Mahogany Secretary

Handsome flame mahogany secretary with classic, clean Empire lines.  The top has two key lock doors with original glass, four adjustable shelves and two drawers.  The base has one key lock drawer and a pair of key lock doors below.  It has a deep rich tone and is a great piece to store and display "volumes" of books and or decorative objects.  92" h., 45" l., 21" w.  American, c. 1860  SOLD

Let it Snow

Last night while driving home from a couple of days on the road, I caught the beginnings of the snow storm.  I also heard this song, which I hadn't heard in years, on the radio.  For those who have seen "Bagdad Cafe", it will be familiar.  I think it may be the best song for driving through a snow storm.....a little melancholy but so beautiful.  I discovered this live version and like it a lot.  No lip synching here.  If you like the song, the Jeff Buckley and Holly Cole versions are pretty terrific as well.

If you don't have to go out today, enjoy the snow day.  We are in the shop and will be posting lots of great new pieces throughout the course of the day.  Please stop in over the weekend to see them in person if you have a chance.

"Edward Zajac" Table Lamp

The peak of chic.  Fresh out of Parson's Design School in NYC, Edward Zajac landed a job with and became the protege of legendary interior decorator Billy Baldwin.  He worked for Baldwin for nine years before venturing out on his own and eventually partnering with Richard Callahan.  During the 1970's, Zajac and Callahan interiors were known for their bold and daring mix of color and pattern.  In addition, Edward Zajac was also known for designing his own pieces.  This rare and very unique lamp was designed by Zajac in 1972 and retains it's original paper label.  The body of the lamp is made up of two sections of textured composite with a lucite center piece.  It would look fantastic with a variety of shade types and perhaps would be best suited with a long, flat conical shade.  28" h., 15" w.  American, c. 1972  SOLD

We Love American Style

This month our shop window had three sources of inspiration, Valentine's Day, American style and a 1970's comedic television anthology.  "Love American Style", for those who don't remember was a Friday night prime-time t.v. show that ran from 1969-1974.  For several seasons it was part of a Friday night ABC line up that included Room 222, The Partridge Family, The Brady Bunch and The Odd Couple.  It had a very catchy theme song and featured several different stories of romance each week, usually with a comedic spin. The focal point of our February window is the large heart from the show.  Also featured is our tulip dining set.  A large red painted Valentine heart serves as a nice backdrop for the tulip chair with it's bright yellow seat cushion.

"Love American Style" Love and the Particular Girl

This is an original episode of Love American Style featuring Agnes Moorehead..also known as Endora, Samantha's mother on Bewitched.
