Halfred Tygesen; Untitled Landscape

Halfred Tygesen (1890-1951) was born in Copenhagen, Denmark and came to Canada in 1926.  He had attended art school in Denmark and became a member of the Danish Royal Academy.  In Canada, Tygesen introduced a technique for pastel "painting".  He travelled across the country painting scenes from Stanley Park in Vancouver to the Ontario countryside.  He also painted Danish landscapes and seascapes based on drawings he had done before he moved to Canada.  While he was quite prolific and sold through a wide variety of channels, including the Eaton College store, his paintings are becoming increasingly harder to come by.  We featured many pieces by Tygesen in the old shop, but I think this is the first one we have shown in Hamilton.  This oil pastel painting depicts a scene which feels like a late summer Ontario landscape.  It is signed in the lower left corner and retains its original frame.  28" w., 24" h.  Canadian, c. 1940's  SOLD
Condition:  Very good vintage condition.

Period Writing Desk/ Library Table

Antiquing!  While we love modern, there's really nothing that adds layers, texture and character to a home like some nicely placed true antiques.  This very handsome early 19th c. mahogany writing desk/ library table, with original embossed leather top, has tapered legs with inlaid banding and patinated brass casters.  The drawers also have inlaid banding, their original wood pulls and very fine dovetailing.  Inside one of the drawers is a tag marked "THE WARDROOM LTD" and a price of $2,945.00.  An old tag from the heyday of true antiques?? The desk comes with a custom glass top (not pictured)  44" w.,  26" d., 30" h.  c. early 19th c.  SOLD
Condition:  Very good vintage condition with age appropriate wear.

Ernest Fredericks; Untitled Landscape

Ernest Fredericks (1877-1959) was born Frederick Ernest Swedlum to Swedish parents on a farm near McPherson, Kansas in 1877.  Farm life was not very appealing to him, and as a young adult he moved to Chicago and began his studies at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.  He was heavily influenced by Western American master painter Birger Sanzden, another Kansan of Swedish descent.  Fredericks' subject matter was always the landscape and his paintings usually focused on a simple path, stream or mountain cabin.  Following his studies at The Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, Swedlum exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and in the All Illinois Art Shows.  His paintings were often accompanied by either a typed biographical sketch or a reprint of a 1940 edition from the Chicago Daily News pertaining to a Swedlum exhibition.  This very appealing oil on canvas by Fredericks was painted in a primarily pastel pallette.  A stream flanked by Birch trees meanders toward a cabin in the distance.  Beyond the cabin, tree tops are outlined by a patch of pale blue sky.  The painting is signed in the lower right corner.  He was a fairly prolific artist and there are quite a few examples of his work online from various galleries and auction houses across the U.S.  This is one of his larger and better pieces.  A comparable work in terms of period, quality and size sold recently in Cincinnati.  http://www.cincyart.com/19th-20th-century-ei/ernest-t-fredericks

Victorian Peacock Rocker

An old boss and design mentor once said to me....."There are no bad colors, just bad applications."  I think the same can be said about design styles (although I'm still trying to make sense of Memphis).  Nothing like a little Victorian to add some texture and layers to your modern, boho, or eclectic interior.  Or garden.  This Victorian peacock wire rocker looks great with its original paint and patina, but could be easily freshened up or have its color changed.  45" h., 32" w., 34" d.  Late 19th c.  SOLD

Wendell Castle; Castle Chair

Your home.....your Castle.  Our April windows celebrate Wendell Castle (1932-2018).  Wendell Castle was "the most important postwar American furniture designer, by a long shot".  (Glenn Adamson, senior research scholar at the Yale Center for British Art and the former director of New York's Museum of Arts and Design.)  His work often blurred the line between furniture and art, and he was known as the "father of art furniture".  "I thought of the work as sculpture, not furniture" he told The New York Times in a 2010 interview.  His career spanned more than a half-century and his works are included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.  This month's Architectural Digest pays tribute to Castle with a six page article featuring his work and his Scottsville, NY home.  We are featuring his iconic, organic "Castle Chair" in orange.  It was designed in 1969 as part of the molar series and is made of molded fiberglass.  It's art, but it's also extremely comfortable....and functional, with its cup/ snack/ remote/ etc..... holder platform.  24" h., 44" w., 36" d.  American, c. 1970  SOLD
