New Shop Hours

Beginning this week, we're going to be spending even more time on the road sourcing beautiful things for the shop.  As a result, we are going to be changing up our hours a little bit.  Starting November 1st, the shop will be open from Wednesday through Saturday from 11- 5.  We will be open by chance (as always, you'll often find us in the shop outside of regular business hours) or by appointment.  For an appointment, please email michael@michaelthomasantiques.com or phone 416.407.1269.  Otherwise, if the flag is out, we're in.

Curtis Jere Leaf Sculpture

Well, it seems wall sculptures have been our thing this month.  Here is the earliest Curtis Jere we have featured and one of the earliest we have seen.  Please check out the Jere piece listed last week for a history of the design house.  This leaf sculpture has great color and patination.  The leaves have a beautiful mix of copper, brass, gold, red and verdigris tones.  There are three sprigs of berries with red and gold tones.  The piece may be hung vertically or horizontally.  44" h., 36" w.  American, c. 1968  SOLD

RWay Furniture Chest of Drawers

Strange bedfellows?  Not really. More like super stylish bedfellows.  This is the companion piece to the long dresser listed earlier this week.  With a nod to Saarinen and some of the finer Mid-Century Italian furniture we have seen, this chest by RWay is on our list of favorite pieces that have made their way into the shop.  It was a custom made piece for the client who purchased it in the 1950's.  She ordered a production piece, but with ivory colored drawer fronts.  In our research we have not found any other pieces with contrasting drawer fronts by RWay.  The addition of the contrasting fronts serves to enhance the already sophisticated styling of the piece with its cool lines, sculptural hardware and brass legs.  We found these cards in the back of one of the drawers.  When furniture used to come with thank you notes!  The cards are in as good of condition as the chest.  34" l., 18.5" d., 42" h.  American, c. 1950's  SOLD

Peter Protzman for Herman Miller, Pair of Chairs

Pop!  Can you see these chairs below a Warhol, Lichtenstein or Hockney?  We kind of like them below a Britt Randle!  Either way, they will bring a great pop of color and pattern to any room.  They were designed by Peter Protzman for Herman Miller and retain their original fuchsia and tangerine striped upholstery which was designed by Alexander Girard.  Girard was a celebrated fabric designer whom in addition to collaborating with Protzman also worked with George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames.  32" h., 23" w., 28" d.  American, c. 1960's  SOLD

Curtis Jere Leaf Sculpture

The Curtis Jere design house was founded in California in 1963 and produced sculptural works ranging from the representational to the highly abstract.  Works produced by the company, particularly those of the 1960's and 70's, have become highly praised and sought after today by collectors.  Writer Mitchell Owens wrote a two page article on the history of C. Jere for the November 2010 issue of Elle Decor.  In it he remarks that "Today those (Jere) pieces are attracting the admiration of leading dealers in vintage chic".  He goes on to note that after launching in 1963 Jere sculptures were distributed by Raymor, a cutting edge studio in New York City, and retailed at Gump's in San Francisco and other high end retailers in several major cities across the U.S.  This signed and dated leaf sculpture is one of the largest and finest of the many wall sculptures by Jere that we have featured over the years.  5' h., 3' w.  American, c. 1979  SOLD
