Georgian Writing/ Architect's Table

I continue to purchase beautiful antique pieces for my historic Hudson Valley house overlooking the river.  Then I return home and I am once again faced with the realization that I don't have said dream home.  One day the dream may become a reality, but for now, my loss is the shop's gain.  Today, the gain comes in the form of this wonderful Georgian writing/ architect's table.  This period mahogany table/ desk has an adjustable top with its original gold embossed, green leather writing surface.  There is a pull out writing surface on the side and a single drawer in the front with the original patinated brass pull.  The sides and front have contrasting inlaid banding.  While the desk is over 200 years old, it is timeless both in style and in function.  It is the perfect size for a lap top, and there is ample leg room.  31.5" h., 24" w., 18" d.  American, c. 1800  SOLD
Condition:  Very good vintage condition with minor veneer loss.

Set of Bronze Stag Girandoles

Handsome set of bronze girandoles with "stag in forest" design.  This is a wonderful winter decorating grouping, but this set of candle holders would look fantastic on a mantle or sideboard all year long.  The bronze has a heavy verdigris patina which tones them down a bit, giving them a sort of elegant cottagey/ country house feel.  The hand cut crystal prisms are all present and accounted for, and all original.  Center, 18" h., 17" l., 3" w.  American, c. 1840  SOLD

Brutalist Lion Sculpture

We've often seen this metal lion sculpture attributed to C. Jere and listed for as much as $600.00 USD.  It is not signed and we feel pretty confident it is not a Jere piece.  That being said, it is a great decorative piece and nicely crafted.  The expressive face and body are made of heavy gage, painted steel wire and the base is painted metal.  18" h., 18" w., 5" d.  American, c. 2nd half 20th c.  SOLD

Raymond Loewy for Mengel Furniture, Tall Chest

Raymond Loewy was one of the most important industrial designers of the twentieth century, designing everything from automobiles to logos for cigarette packaging.

Please check out his official website for more information on his very interesting life and career. https://www.raymondloewy.com/

We have been fortunate to have had a number of his pieces pass through the shop over the last decade.  Below are a few of our favorites.

The cerused oak chest below, designed by Loewy for Mengel Furniture, is a 10 out of 10 in terms of design, quality and condition.  It's pretty rare to find cerused oak pieces from this period in such excellent original condition.  Due to wear, they usually get refinished.  The color of this six drawer chest is a warm grey with olive tones.  The chest has its original polished chrome bar pulls.  It's a beauty.  45" h., 34" w., 19" h.  American, c. 1950's  SOLD
Condition:  Excellent vintage condition.

Charles Carman Trunk

This is a pretty special piece.  The trunk is almost 200 years old and was made by Charles Carman, Saddle, Harness, Cap and Trunk Makers.  At the time it was made, they were located at 27 Main Street in Poughkeepsie, NY.  Poughkeepsie was still fairly small with a population of about 3,000 and no paved roads at this point.  Commerce was carried on by sloops, and four sailing ships left for New York City each week.  Charles Carman would likely have exported these to NYC.  He may have also retailed them in Poughkeepsie.  Steamboats landed at the foot of Main Street every night to take passengers to Albany and New York City.  A smaller trunk such as this one would have been perfect for shorter steamboat trips.
This domed top trunk has a wood body covered in hide with leather straps and metal tacks.  It has an iron lock and iron handles.  Both handles are in tact.  The interior of the trunk still has its original blue paper lining and even retains its original label.  This outstanding historical, museum worthy, object would make quite a showpiece in a home or cottage.  28" l., 14 1/2" w., 12" h.  American, c. 1820's  SOLD
