Paul Chelko; Untitled Abstract Oil on Board

Paul Chelko (1933-2007) was an American (Georgia) artist who was active for more than 40 years.  In addition to a long and very successful artistic career, he also taught art at various institutions in the U.S. and was a member of the White House Art in the Embassies Program.  His work has been featured in the High Museum of Art and The Smithsonian, and his collectors included Oprah Winfrey, Frank Sinatra, Vincent Price, and Coretta Scott King.  This signed abstract oil on board is an earlier work in its original frame.  If you've always wondered what it would be like to live like Oprah, here is an opportunity to share a bit of her (art) world if... Bloomingdale's Bergere Chair

An original ad for the Bloomingdale's 'Trianon' Collection reads...."Magnificent reproductions that have been so faithfully reproduced, the results are breathtaking.  Notice hand carved frames of imported woods in rich mellow tones.  Sumptuous fabrics straight from the days of ballroom galas; damasks, brocades, silks, velvets, even suede.  These luxurious coverings are filled to the bursting with down and feathers.  All spring systems have been done in an 8-way hand tied method.  We urge you to come and see this spectacular assortment of singular works of beauty."  I really need to work on my copy game!  This Bergere chair from the Trianon collection has a hand carved frame and retains it's original sumptuous, somewhat regal, purple cotton velvet upholstery.  The chair is stuffed with horse hair and the cushion with down.  It has its original Bloomingdale's label  37.5" h., 22.5" w., 19.5" d.  American, c. Plycraft Lounge Chair and Ottoman

Iconic MCM chair and ottoman with aluminum bases by Plycraft in the style of Eames.  It was originally purchased in 1972 and has had one owner.  If you've never tried one of these out, they are the ultimate reading, watching, or just relaxing chair and ottoman combination.  Chair, 36" h., 32" w., 27" d.  Ottoman, 17" h., 25" w., 21" d.  American, c. 1972  SOLD

At Home with M.T.A.

It's always nice when pieces from the shop find the perfect home.  Our Curtis Jere 'Pom Flower' sculpture is a focal point in the dazzling dining room of designer Caroline Weekes.  Caroline is back in Canada after a lengthy tenure in the states working for several top American design firms.  She is currently establishing her own design firm and will be sharing her exceptional eye and design talents here in Canada.

Giandomenico Belotti for Fly Line; Set of 4 'Spaghetti' Stools

Strung out over Spaghetti.  Our February windows feature four stools from Giandomenico Belotti's 'Spaghetti' series.  (Pieces from this series can also be found in the permanent collection of  MOMA.)  The frames of the stools are enamelled steel.  The back rests and seats are made of thick PVC strings, making them very comfortable.  The string theme was carried through to the window design.  A single piece of yarn strung around a bunch of nails formed each of the four backdrops.

Curtis Jere Bandstand

American Bandstand....or maybe French.  Either way, this is definitely the most charming and perhaps the prettiest Curtis Jere wall sculpture we have featured.  The pagoda style bandstand in the background has a verdigris canopy with floral decoration, patinated brass music stands, and a decorative verdigris fence.  The trees flanking the bandstand are filling in for spring with Modernist foliage.  In the foreground, a cluster of cafe chairs are assembled and awaiting the arrival of concertgoers.  It is signed C. Jere.  46" l., 28" h., 4" d.  American, c. 1970's  SOLD

In the style of James Mont, this Asian Modern Ming chair by Century Furniture Company has traditional Asian elements with brass accents.  The frame is walnut and the seat is upholstered in a cream silk blend fabric.  29.5" h., 30.5" w., 27.5" d.   American, c. 1970's  $425.00

Curtis Jere (Attr.) Globe Sculpture

While we can't find a signature or any other examples of this sensational globe sculpture online, based on the design and quality of construction we feel very confident in attributing it to Curtis Jere.  The decorating possibilities for this monumental hanging globe are only limited by your imagination.  It would work beautifully above a dining table, a bed, in a kitchen, den or just about anywhere a hanging fixture would live.  It is made of welded brass rods and torch cut brass sheets that have been molded to give the countries/ continents dimension.  36" diam.  American, c. 1970's  SOLD

Henredon Chest/ Server/ Desk

This handsome Chippendale style piece by Henredon does triple duty; chest, server and desk.  It has two long drawers with Chippendale style brasses and escutcheons.  Below is a door which opens to a storage compartment.  On either side of the door are a pair of square drawers.  The door and all the drawers have contrasting banded mahogany inlay.  Two slides pull-out to support an additional writing/ serving surface which also has banded mahogany inlay.  34" w., 16" d. (32" when top is flipped open) 29.5" h.  American,   c. 1970's  SOLD

Turner Chinese Chippendale Style Mirror

Turner Classic Mirrors.  While Turner is best known today for their 1950's and 60's modern mirrors and wall art, they also produced some very beautiful classic styles.

Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb Bench

It was a good harvest this week.  It yielded Gibbings gold.  This exceptional piece was designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb.  It does elegant double duty as a bench/ ottoman and a coffee table.  It has been professionally, meticulously and lovingly restored to a new golden glory.  The carved frame with plume detail is lacquered in a soft gold with a satin finish.  The cushion is newly upholstered in a rich and luxurious warm gold mohair.  48" l., 22" d., 18" h.  American, c. 1947 SOLD
