Pair of Pineapple Lamps

The pineapple has a long and rich history as a symbol of hospitality.  In colonial America, pineapples were rare, expensive and considered the most beautiful of exotic fruits.  If, as a guest, you were treated with pineapple at a dinner party, it meant you were held in high regard.  I am not sure about the rarity of this pair of glass pineapple lamps, but they are certainly beautiful.  The body is faceted glass and the leaves and base are gilded metal.  The hardback fabric shades are new.  33" h., 18" diam.  American, c. 1950's  SOLD

Lee Reynolds Zebra Painting

The zebra symbolizes freedom, balance and individuality....also some traits of great decorating.  This very decorative zebra painting is from the Lee Reynolds studio.  Reynolds was born Lee Reynolds Burr in Los Angeles in 1936.  He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts and by 1965 had started his Vanguard Studios in Beverly Hills.  The studio's mission was to produce decorative works of art in the form of avant-garde sculptures and paintings.  Vanguard employed a variety of artists to meet this goal, but all pieces are signed with the 'Lee Reynolds' signature.  Works from the prolific studio have become quite collectible in the last few years.  This framed oil on canvas is 50" w. and 40" h.  American, c. 1970's  SOLD Below are some ideas for decorating with zebra art.

Chinoiserie Secretary

"Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!  Live!  Live!  Live!"  -Auntie Mame  I think the same can be said about design.  This magnificent Chinoiserie Secretary is an 'all you can eat' kind of design feast!  It had me at the finials.  Gilded Chinese figures adorn the top of this two piece, ebonized, embossed and hanpainted secretary.  The two key-lock doors open to an array of drawers, secret compartments, cubby holes and shelves.  Below, the key-lock, drop-front desk opens to reveal more drawers, cubby holes and secret compartments.  Below that are two small and two large drawers.  This one really has to be seen to be fully appreciated.  I was told it was purchased about 20 years ago for $10,000.00 U.S.  90" h. (top of finial) 29" w., 32" d.  20th c.  SOLD
Condition:  Very good vintage condition with age appropriate wear.

Blackwood

Our new windows celebrate the art of master printmaker David Blackwood.  The inspiration came in part from works he has done based on nautical flags.  (The handpainted canvas flags in the windows spell out his name.)  Inspiration also came from a great affection for David.  Some of the best memories of the Port Hope shop revolve around conversations about art and life shared during his regular visits.  His generosity with his knowledge, advice, stories and humor have added so much to the shop experience over the years.  Often when I brought a historical piece of Canadian art into the old shop, he had a story about, knew, worked or studied with the artist.  Nothing beats a living, first-hand art history lesson.  The history lessons sometimes included an intriguing trip to Yorkville and the Toronto gallery scene during the 1960's and 1970's.  Sometimes it was Vancouver, other times the east coast.  In addition to invaluable art lessons, he has been an inspiration, through example, in life lessons....marching to the beat of your own drum, following your passions, working hard and staying the course.  Through his art, teaching, championing and mentoring young artists, he has and continues to make the art world a kinder, more beautiful and more authentic place.
The etchings displayed in the windows are Dante's Barque, 2011 and The Wesleyville Under Construction, 2012
