McGuire Credenza

To quote a wise, design savvy friend, "McGuire never misses the mark".  This custom made credenza hits the bullseye with the casual sophistication that has become their hallmark.  The inspired mix of materials on the chest includes bamboo, cane, leather, and wood.  The sides have bamboo frames, legs and stretchers, and caned center panels.  The eight wooden drawers are faced with bamboo veneer and have patinated brass pulls.  The top has a faux tortoise/ crackle finish protective overlay.  69" l., 22" d., 33.5" h.  American, c. 1970's  SOLD

Heywood Wakefield Credenza with Bookcase

Gentlemen prefer blondes.  At least this week.  But we always like the softened Streamline Moderne lines and warm, mellow tones of Heywood Wakefield.  Just in, this beautiful credenza with bookcase/ display cabinet in their 'wheat' finish.  The cabinet has six adjustable shelves (which are flat on one side and have plate rails on the other) and three sliding glass doors.  Below, the credenza has four ample drawers.  The bottom drawer extends the full width of the piece.  On either side are doors which open to compartments with one adjustable shelf.  This would be a wonderful focal point in any room and it provides tons of storage.  54" w., 18" d., 72" h.  American, c. 1948  SOLD

Sligh Furniture Co. Writing Desk

Deja vu.  This classic leather-top writing desk by Sligh is very similar in style to the desk we posted two weeks ago, but about 100+ years later.  The desk has a center drawer with a pair of patinated brass pulls.  To the left, there are two drawer fronts but a single drawer of double depth with removable file dividers.  To the right are two drawers, a shallower top and a deeper bottom.  The leather top has gold embossing. 46" w., 23" d., 29.25" h.  American, c. 1960's  SOLD

Chinese Chippendale Style Mirror

Beautiful, carved giltwood, Chinese Chippendale style mirror.  This impressive, highly decorative mirror has an outer frame composed of flowers and scrolling acanthus leaves, and is topped with an acanthus crest.  45.5" h., 26" w.  Italian, 1st half 20th c.  SOLD

LeCorbusier; LC1 Chair

"Like buttah".  This butter yellow LC1 leather and chrome sling chair by LeCorbusier is a late 20th c., Italian made model by Palazzetti.  Its smaller scale makes it super functional in addition to being very comfortable and an iconic, timeless, modern design.  The yellow is no longer in production.  25" h., 26" w., 25" d.  Italian, c. late 20th c.  SOLD

Edward Wormley for Dunbar; Pair of Riemerschmid Chairs

Wormley for the win.  Subtle sophistication, understated elegance.  The 'Riemerschmid' chair was originally designed by Richard Riemerschmid for the Dresden Exhibition of 1899, and adapted and detailed for Dunbar by Edward Wormley in 1947.  Riemerschmid approved of Wormley's modifications and complimented him on the "improvements to form and comfort."  This pair of Riemerschmid chairs by Wormley for Dunbar have mahogany frames which have been beautifully restored.  The black leather seats are original.  One chair retains the original metal Dunbar tag.  31" h., back, 19" h., seat, 23.5" w., 24" d.  American, c. 1947  SOLD

Renzo Rutili for Johson Furniture; Asian Modern Cabinet

Our May showstopper comes from Renzo Rutili (1901-1966).  Renzo Rutili was born in Pennsylvania and educated at Carnegie Institute.  He also studied design in Europe for several years before becoming a designer for Johnson Furniture Co.  He served as their head of design from 1933 into the 1960's.  In addition to creating his own extraordinary designs for the company, he oversaw the design and production of works contracted by such iconic Modern designers as Paul Frankl and Eliel Saarinen.  This stunning cabinet by Renzo Rutili is composed of two units which sit in a separate base.  It has been newly restored with the exception of the doors and the backs which are in original condition.  The doors are gold leafed and handpainted with subtle landscape scenes.  The backs are ebonized and handpainted, and there is a single hole for a cord in the lower right corner of one unit.  The feet have their original patinated brass caps.  Inside each cabinet is one full length adjustable shelf.  One of the shelves has the original Johnson label.  As always, the trifecta of quality, design and value here at MTA.   68" l., 19" d., 25" h.  American, c. 1950's  SOLD

DeGroot Brutalist Fish Sculpture

Go Fish!  Seaside or city, this wonderful modern Brutalist sculpture by DeGroot would be right at home.  The kinetic, mixed metal sculpture features five fish on metal rods attached to a bone-like base.  The piece is signed on a copper tag attached to the base.  36" h., 7" w., 6" d.  American, c. 1960's  SOLD
