John Risley Duyan Chair

Cradle yourself in modern art.  The 'Duyan Chair' (duyan translates to cradle/ hammock) was designed by John Risley in the early 1950's.  Risley (1919-2001) was an American artist and designer whose work ranged from functional objects and furniture to sculpture and fine arts.  His academic resume included the Rhode Island School of Design and the Cranbrook Academy which is where he met his wife, ceramicist Mary Kring Risley.  In the early 1950's the couple were hired by the State Department and traveled to the Philippines and Taiwan where they worked to pair local craft industries and contemporary design.  The experience was instrumental in Risley's work as it led him to incorporate indigenous techniques and materials into his own sculpture and manufactured pieces.  That influence of techniques and materials is clearly seen in his 'Duyan Chair'.  This iconic chair blurs the line between furniture and sculpture and has stood the design test of time beautifully.  The base of the chair is iron.  The sling seat is woven rattan and is easily removed from the base.  It's appealing from every angle and a perfectly artful addition to a modern interior, patio or garden.  45" l., 36" w., 33.5" h.  American, c. 1950's  SOLD

Italian Wheat Lamp

Gaetano Sciolari for Lightolier; Brass and Glass Rod Lamps

Stylish pair of Sciolari 70's table lamps with brass bases and caps, and bodies composed of suspended glass rods.  The lamps have 3-way switches so the bodies and shades can be illuminated individually or together.  I believe the shades are original.  17" h., 9" w., 9" d.  American, c. 1970's  $395.00 for the pair

Imperial Furniture Modern Desk

Fine Canadian Design.  This desk was born in Canada, raised in the U.S., and has now returned home.  The Imperial Furniture Company opened in Stratford, Ontario in 1905.  In the early 1940's they were at the forefront of Canadian Modern furniture design and production when they hired Eliel Saarinen to design a line of furniture that was described as "modern with a purpose".  In the early 1950's they enlisted Dutch designer Jan Kuypers as their in-house designer.  He established Imperial as the home of Canadian Modern winning 25 of the 125 national design awards given out during his first three years with the company.  He was also instrumental in allowing Canada to keep pace with what was happening in the design world south of the border.  This modern, beautifully designed desk by Imperial features a floating top, a bank of three drawers on the left and two on the right.  The lower right drawer accommodates files.  The drawer pulls as well as the tapered feet are brushed brass.  The desk is finished on all sides so it can float in a room.  59.75" w., 29.75" d., 28.5" h.  Canadian, c. 1950's  SOLD

Adolphe Mouron Cassandre; Willi's Wine Bar Poster

The wonderfully graphic and quintessentially Art Deco image for this poster was created in 1935 by the renowned French poster artist A.M. Cassandre.  It was created for an unknown beverage company, but never used by the company.  In 1984 Willi's Wine Bar in Paris purchased the image from the estate of Cassandre and used it for the first of their annual posters.  This is an original first edition lithograph from the 1984 printing by Henri Mouton.  Framed, 39.5" h., 27.5" w.  French, c.1984  SOLD

Robert Sonneman Floor Lamp

A vintage Sonneman table lamp, bedside at the Beverly Hills home of Elton John.

Robert Sonneman started designing innovative lighting in the 1960's and launched his first company, now called SONNEMAN-A Way of Light, in 1967.  He is still working today and has won numerous design awards over the years.  His lighting designs are included in many prestigious private and public collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston.  This 1970's chromed metal floor lamp by Sonneman is cool, clean and thoroughly modern.  It has a rectangular base and a substantial 52" x 1.5" flat bar body.  It has 5 sockets and a switch on the body.  (base only)   64" h., 11" w., 8" d.  American, c. 1970's  SOLD

Curtis Jere Modern Leaves Sculpture

We've had Curtis Jere pieces with the original hang-tags before, but I can't remember ever having one with the original foil label.  That's just a little bonus on this beauty.  The modern leaves sculpture features mixed metals and both torch and straight cut leaves.  The leaves and some of the branches can be adjusted and the sculpture can be hung horizontally, vertically or at an angle.  It is signed and dated.  54" x 30", 7" d.  American, c. 1979  SOLD

Family Day/ Presidents' Day Weekend

We will be closing at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday for the long weekend.  If you're celebrating Family Day or Presidents' Day, have a happy and safe long weekend!  In honor of Presidents' Day is this (partially) presidential offering.  These are limited edition sulphide paperweights, or cameos, by Baccarat.  They are 20th century versions of the 19th century paperweights for which Baccarat is famous.  The cameos were carved by various French sculptors and are signed.  They depict Kennedy, Hoover, Monroe, Thomas Paine and Napoleon Bonaparte.  J.F.K. has a garnet red background, Hoover's is cobalt blue.  Monroe's is deep orange.  Napoleon's is garnet and Paine's is blue opaline.  Appx. 3" diam., 1.5" h.  American, c. 1970's  $50.00 each

John Kazann; Abstract Paintings

John Kazann was an original member of Phoenix Gallery in N.Y.C.  Phoenix Gallery opened in 1958 and was one of what would come to be known as The 10th Street Galleries.  In the 1950's and early 1960's, younger artists decided to stop trying to court the favor of more established uptown galleries and began opening artist-run cooperative spaces on and around East 10th Street in the East Village.  A number of older and more established artists like Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline already had studios in the area and their presence was a draw for emerging artists.  The founders and original artist members of the galleries that made up the '10th Street Scene' were relatively unknown.  However, many established artists joined early on and many important careers were begun and nurtured while members at one of the 10th Street Galleries.  Members at the various galleries in the 1950's and 1960's included Elaine de Kooning, Willem de Kooning, Alex Katz, Philip Pearlstien, George Segal, Rudy Burkhardt, Al Held, Al Jensen and Philip Guston.  Imagine what an exciting time this must have been in New York as America was overtaking Europe as the capital of modern art and the Village was at the epicenter.
This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a piece of  N.Y.C. and American Modern Art History.  These large, impactful, bold abstract paintings were done by John Kazann prior to his membership at Phoenix Gallery.  One was painted in 1953, one in '54 and one in '55.  They are oil on canvas and each has been newly professionally cleaned, varnished, restretched on new stretchers and framed (black wood frames).  51" w., 53" h.  American, c. 1953, 1954, 1955  SOLD
