"Gilbert Rohde for Herman Miller" Streamline Bedroom Group

If you had the opportunity to watch the Cooper-Hewitt video posted earlier this week, you likely have a clear understanding of the impact Gilbert Rohde had on modern design.  If you are a Herman Miller fan, you were probably quite surprised to see what their furniture offerings looked like prior to Rohde's influence.  This rare and important bedroom grouping from 1934 comes from the early years of their partnership.  The group is comprised of a pair of asymmetrical chests, a desk or dressing table, and a head and foot board with side rails.  The set is made of sycamore and mahogany.  It has been professionally restored by expert craftsmen and still retains a beautiful aged patina.  This ranks high in our all time "top ten" at Michael Thomas.  We will be including a copy of "Gilbert Rohde: Modern Design for Modern Living" by Phyllis Ross.  Chest (l.) 36" l., 19" w., 34" h.  Chest (r.) 32" l., 19" w., 41" h.  Desk/ Dressing Table 38" l., 19" w., 41" h., Head and Foot Board 56" l.  American, c. 1934  SOLD

Cooper-Hewitt: Gilbert Rohde and Design Now

Later this week we will be posting and offering for sale a rare and important bedroom grouping designed in 1934 by renowned 20th century designer Gilbert Rohde (1894-1944) for the Herman Miller Furniture Company.  In his relatively short lifetime, Rohde produced some of the most iconic designs of the 20th century.  His exceptional furniture, lighting, clocks and decorative objects may be found in important private collections worldwide as well as many museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the M.O.M.A. in N.Y.C., the Brooklyn Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.  With the bedroom grouping, we will be including a copy of the 2009 book by Phyllis Ross, "Gilbert Rohde: Modern Design for Modern Living."  Below is a video from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum: Gilbert Rohde and Design Now with Phyllis Ross speaking.  If you have an interest in 20th century design, it will be twenty minutes well spent.  Please make sure to check back later this week for the posting.
