Red Lion Furniture Chest

Ava Gardner's chest!  In 1949 when Movieland magazine visited the actress in her Nichols Canyon, L.A. home, she was photographed in front of the same Red Lion chest of drawers.  The writer reported that Gardner opted for a room-by-room approach to decorating, and selected blond-wood "modern" furniture.  The home was also featured in the March 2006 issue of Architectural Digest.
The Red Lion Furniture Company was founded in 1907 in Red Lion, PA and produced pieces of exceptional quality and design.  During the period this chest was made, Red Lion was in collaboration with designers such as Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen as well as other leading designers of the period.  Pieces produced by Red  Lion were amongst the first pieces to be exhibited through The MoMA's  Department of Industrial Design.  The Department was established in 1940.  We have featured a number of pieces by Red Lion in the past, including this same chest.  It was a favorite then and still is now.  The blond mahogany six drawer chest has nice modern lines, great proportions and  handsome patinated brass hardware.  60" l., 20" d., 31" h.  American, c. 1940's  SOLD
Condition:  Front and sides are in very good vintage condition.  Top is in good-fair vintage condition with some color variance and marks.
